Bathinda(The Uttam Hindu): The ongoing dispute over land possession in Dunevala village, Bathinda, has escalated into a standoff between Punjab Police and farmers. Both sides remain adamant about their claims on the land. Reports indicate that over 250 farmers, including several prominent leaders, have been booked at the Sangat Mandi police station. The Bharat Mala Project, meant for development, has now turned into the Bharat Mala Controversy in the region.

The confrontation started when farmers demanded fair compensation for their land, similar to what other farmers had received. However, the administration, backed by police forces, acquired the land, prompting farmers to stage a protest in the village. This led to clashes, during which several farmers and police personnel sustained injuries. Following the skirmish, a case was filed against prominent leaders of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Ugrahan), including state president Joginder Singh Ugrahan, Jhanda Singh Jethuke, Shingara Singh Mann, Harjinder Singh Baggi, Harjinder Singh Ghrachon, and Ajaypal Ghuda, along with 250-300 farmers.

Despite the tensions, reports suggest a meeting between the administration and farmers might be held to find a resolution. Meanwhile, the police have deployed heavy forces in the area, including personnel from other districts, to maintain law and order. Farmers have expressed strong resentment against the police for using lathi-charge and tear gas and registering cases against them. In response, the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Ugrahan) has announced another massive gathering and plans to intensify their protest. The police, anticipating further escalation, have heightened security arrangements to prevent any disruptions.
