New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): With the arrival of the winter season many health issues arise and one of the most common problems is swelling and redness of the fingers and toes due to the cold. For some individuals, the swelling can worsen causing intense itching. Scratching the affected areas can lead to increased pain, burning sensations, and even the formation of wounds. Here are some tips to manage this issue:

1. Sun Exposure: In the morning, try to keep your fingers and toes in the first rays of the sun. Additionally, expose your hands and feet to the sun during the afternoon for relief.

2. Seek Medical Attention: If swelling and itching on the fingers and toes lead to wounds, it’s important to consult a doctor immediately. Winter-related wounds can worsen if not treated properly.

3. Wear Comfortable Footwear: Avoid wearing tight shoes or slippers in cold weather. Opt for comfortable footwear that will relieve pressure on your feet and help prevent discomfort.

4. Warm Water Soak: If the swelling of your fingers and toes increases, avoid working with cold water for long periods. Instead, use warm water to wash them which can help reduce swelling.

5. Avoid Immediate Exposure to Fire: After placing your hands in cold water, never expose them to direct heat or fire immediately. This can cause more harm than good and may worsen the symptoms.

Taking these precautions can help reduce the discomfort associated with cold weather and prevent further complications.
