New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Recent viral videos suggest that after brushing your teeth you should avoid rinsing with water or mouthwash to allow fluoride to properly protect your enamel. Dentists confirm that this advice is accurate. According to experts rinsing immediately after brushing washes away the fluoride, preventing it from strengthening your enamel and reducing cavities. Dr. Raghavendra B R a dentist at Gleneagles BGS Hospital Bengaluru, explains, “If you rinse you wash away the fluoride and it cannot work its magic.” To gain the maximum benefits of fluoride it's recommended to spit out the excess toothpaste and avoid drinking water for 20-30 minutes. If rinsing is necessary using a fluoride mouth rinse is an alternative.

Fluoride plays a critical role in preventing tooth decay and plaque buildup by forming fluorapatite a mineral that strengthens enamel. It also encourages remineralization by supporting calcium and phosphate ions in the teeth. However, children and those with dental fluorosis should avoid fluoride toothpaste and may opt for fluoride-free alternatives.

Dentists continue to recommend fluoride toothpaste for most people as it offers better protection against cavities and plaque compared to non-fluoride toothpastes which contain ingredients like xylitol. For overall oral health experts suggest brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled brush, flossing daily and limiting sugar and acidic foods. Using an antibacterial mouthwash and staying hydrated are also important habits for maintaining a healthy smile. Smoking and tobacco use should be avoided as they increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
