At the book launch, attendees were curious about the central theme of Mera Gham, wondering whether it was a sorrow of unrequited love or something deeper. Maan explained that his poems reflect youthful angst political and societal struggles the pain of Partition, and themes of love and loss. He shared that when people move from villages to cities they bring their dreams with them and love is often one of those dreams.

One of his standout poems, Pagal Shayar, encapsulates these emotions with the lines: “Daur aata hai aur daur jata hai/ Diwana har daur main mafhfil sajata hai/ Bikte honge fankar tukdon pe/ Pagal shayar apni dhun main gaata hai…” Babbu Maan, known for his hands-on approach, writes, composes and sings all his songs incorporating his personal experiences into his work. Reflecting on his creative process, he shared that growing up in a village, he was deeply affected by casteism and the exploitation of workers who didn’t receive fair wages. He noted that life in the village is vastly different from city life and those experiences have influenced the songs he writes and the films he creates. Mera Gham is more than just a poetry book—it is a window into the heart and mind of one of Punjabi music’s most beloved artists.
