Does Skipping Bath in Winter Really Extend Lifespan? Watch Viral VIDEO Startling Claim

Update: 2025-01-07 05:57 GMT

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): For many, the thought of a winter shower feels more like a chore than a necessity. While skipping a bath might sound unhygienic, a viral Instagram video by Dr. Rebecca Pinto claims it could actually increase life expectancy by 34%. Garnering 6.6 million views, the claim has sparked intrigue and skepticism alike.

Experts Dispute the Bold Claim

Despite its popularity, Dr. Pinto’s video doesn’t reference any research or journal to back the claim. Medical professionals remain unconvinced.

Dr. Balakrishna G. K., Senior Consultant at Gleneagles BGS Hospital, Bengaluru explains, “The assertion that skipping baths increases lifespan by 34% is exaggerated and lacks scientific support. While frequent bathing can disrupt the skin microbiome skipping baths entirely raises hygiene concerns, increasing the risk of infections.”

Dr. H. Guru Prasad from CARE Hospitals, Hyderabad adds “Longevity depends on complex factors like genetics, lifestyle and environment. Bathing habits alone are unlikely to have a significant impact.”

Balancing Hygiene in Winter

Bathing less frequently in winter is common in colder climates but completely avoiding baths can lead to issues like clogged pores, skin irritation and infections due to sweat and pollutant buildup. Experts recommend striking a balance:

- Opt for lukewarm water: It cleans without excessively drying the skin.

- Clean key areas: Focus on armpits and feet if skipping full baths.

- Moisturize: Follow up with a good moisturizer to prevent dryness.

- Use mild soaps: Avoid harsh cleansers that strip natural oils.

Cold and hot showers each have their merits—cold showers improve circulation and reduce inflammation while hot baths soothe muscles and relax the body. In winter, lukewarm baths strike the perfect balance between cleanliness and skin health.

So while skipping the occasional bath might not drastically impact your lifespan maintaining hygiene and skin care during winter remains essential.
