Brake Dust: The Silent Lung Killer Worse Than Diesel Exhaust!

Update: 2025-02-17 07:46 GMT

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Research suggests that brake dust, a byproduct of vehicle braking, may be more harmful to human health than diesel emissions. Produced by the friction between brake pads and discs, these microscopic particles make up up to 55% of all traffic-related fine particulate pollution. Despite this, brake dust remains largely unregulated.

Studies from the University of Southampton reveal that copper-rich brake pads, commonly used in modern vehicles, are particularly harmful. The copper accumulates in lung cells, causing inflammation and potential long-term health issues like lung disease and cancer. While some US states have limited copper in brake pads to protect aquatic life, the health implications for humans remain largely overlooked.

Electric vehicles (EVs), though considered environmentally friendly, may exacerbate the brake dust problem. Their heavy batteries require more braking force, leading to increased dust production. Experts warn that the "zero-emission" label for EVs is misleading, as they still generate significant non-exhaust pollution.

To tackle this issue, experts recommend developing copper-free brake pads, improving filtration systems, and expanding regulations to include non-exhaust pollutants like brake dust. As awareness grows, consumers can help by choosing vehicles with low-emission braking systems.

This hidden threat to public health must be addressed to ensure cleaner air in urban areas. While emissions from vehicle tailpipes have long been the focus, it’s now clear that brake dust is a serious pollutant that needs attention.
