SP Dragged 200 Meters and Told 'Today’s Your Last Day'; Four, Including Three Constables, Face Action

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In 2010, Kalpana Saxena, who was the SP of Traffic, was attacked in Bareilly's Cantt police station area. While investigating a complaint about traffic policemen extorting money from truck drivers, she was targeted by constables who tried to run her over with a car. She was dragged for 200 meters. On Friday, Additional District and Session Judge Suresh Kumar Gupta convicted four people, including three constables, who were involved in the attack. The court sentenced them to jail and the hearing on their sentence will be held on February 24. Kalpana Saxena is now the Additional Police Commissioner in Ghaziabad.

The incident took place on September 2, 2010, near the shrine on Bareilly-Shahjahanpur Road in the Cantt area. Kalpana had gone there to arrest some traffic policemen who were extorting money from truck drivers. When she arrived, constables Ravindra, Ravendra, Manoj and another person named Dharmendra attempted to kill her by running her over with a car. They dragged her for 200 meters, hitting her on the head and threatening to kill her. When they failed to kill her, they pushed her aside and fled. The police filed a case and investigated the incident. A chargesheet was submitted and 14 witnesses along with 22 pieces of evidence were presented in court. After hearing both sides, the court declared all four accused guilty.

Kalpana Saxena in her complaint, explained that on that day, she was on duty at Chowki Chowk with her driver and two constables. She received information that some traffic policemen were stopping trucks on the highway and taking money. When she arrived at the scene, she saw constable Manoj sitting in the driver's seat of a car, while another person was taking money from the truck drivers. She realized the policemen were extorting money and tried to arrest them. As she approached, constable Manoj started the car and attempted to run her over. Kalpana grabbed him by the neck while the car kept moving, but the other constables attacked her and dragged her for 200 meters. Eventually, they failed to kill her and fled the scene.
