S Jaishankar slams Canada: Advocates for diplomatic sensibility
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) : External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar strongly rejected the Canadian government's targeting of Indian diplomats amid the escalating diplomatic dispute over allegations linking New Delhi to the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
At an event in Pune on Saturday, he emphasized that India had previously raised concerns about organized crime in Canada, which went largely ignored due to a long-standing permissive environment. Jaishankar called for a “more sensible, more sober, more responsible” approach from Canadian authorities, underlining India’s commitment to national integrity and sovereignty.
Tensions surged last week when Canada identified India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Verma, along with other diplomats, as 'persons of interest' in the investigation into Nijjar's killing. In retaliation, India recalled Verma and five other diplomats while expelling six Canadian diplomats from New Delhi. The situation worsened as Canada hinted at possible sanctions, which Jaishankar dismissed as unfounded and harmful.
Jaishankar also commented on the political landscape in Canada, noting that a small minority has been able to amplify its voice politically, benefiting from favorable conditions. He argued that this dynamic is detrimental not only to India-Canada relations but also to Canada itself.
Additionally, Jaishankar highlighted India’s growing diplomatic influence on the global stage, particularly regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He pointed out India's unique capability to engage with both Russia and Ukraine, illustrating the country's diplomatic reach. He also noted India’s role in shaping international alliances, mentioning the inclusion of the African Union as a G20 member during India's presidency of the group.
