Jammu (The Uttam Hindu): Retired military working dogs, who have shown unwavering loyalty and dedication while serving the nation, are now being given a new purpose – spreading love, joy, and companionship. These remarkable canines, trained for specific military tasks and known for their calm temperament, are being adopted by schools for special children and caring citizens across India, continuing their service in a new and meaningful way, according to a statement from the army on Sunday. On the occasion of the 246th Remount Veterinary Corps Day, the Indian Army presented twelve retired military dogs to Asha Schools and benevolent individuals. This initiative highlights the Army's commitment not only to safeguarding the nation but also to honouring its brave soldiers, both human and animal, who have served the country selflessly.

These dogs, who have served in various terrains and operational situations, have displayed courage and resilience like true soldiers. Their vital contributions have included detecting explosives and mines, avalanche rescues, search and rescue operations, tracking, and guarding, playing key roles in national security and humanitarian missions. Among the breeds being increasingly utilized by the Indian Army are indigenous ones like the Rampur Hound, Mudhol Hound, Combai, Chippiparai, and Rajapalayam, alongside other working dog breeds.

The statement mentioned that the presence of these retired dogs brings significant therapeutic benefits, particularly for children with special needs, by improving their social, emotional, and cognitive skills. For families and individuals, adopting these canine heroes offers a unique opportunity to provide a loving home to a true patriot who has served the nation while gaining a loyal and compassionate companion. During the event, the Director General of Remount Veterinary Services (DGRVS) highlighted the crucial role of the Remount Veterinary Corps in breeding, training, and deploying dogs for various operational tasks. After completing their service, these dogs are brought to the Canine Geriatric Centre at the Remount Veterinary Corps Centre and College in Meerut Cantt, where they are cared for and live comfortably in their retirement years. The Indian Army also maintains Geriatric Centres for its retired equine and canine soldiers, ensuring that they receive the same honour and care as retired human soldiers. These centres provide the retired animals with comfort, care, and dedicated veterinary support, reflecting the Army's steadfast commitment to its silent warriors. By embracing these remarkable dogs, the Indian Army sets an inspiring example of respect, compassion, and care for those who have served the nation, offering these brave animals a well-deserved and fulfilling retirement
