Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu): The Fadnavis government of Maharashtra has dealt a major blow to the public by significantly raising fares for public transportation. This decision affects bus, auto-rickshaw, and taxi fares, which will directly impact the common man’s budget. The state government has already implemented the increased fares for state transport buses starting today.

According to the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), bus fares have been increased by 15%, effective from midnight today. MSRTC explained that there had been no fare hikes in the past three years due to elections, so the government has now implemented a total increase of 15%, which is spread across three years at a rate of 5% per year. As a result, bus travel will become 60 to 80 rupees more expensive in the state. MSRTC operates the largest bus fleet in India, with 15,000 buses.

In addition to buses, auto-rickshaw and taxi fares in Mumbai have also been increased. Taxi fares will rise by 4 rupees per kilometer, while auto-rickshaw fares will increase by 3 rupees per kilometer. Following these hikes, the minimum fare for a taxi will increase from 28 rupees to 32 rupees, and the minimum fare for an auto-rickshaw will go up from 23 rupees to 26 rupees. These fare increases will take effect from February 1.
