PM Modi to Meet Donald Trump Today: Immigration, Tariffs and Deportation on Agenda
New Delhi (Uttam Hindu News): Today, on 13 February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet US President Donald Trump. This meeting will become a platform for discussion on many important issues of India-US relations such as investment, energy, defense, technology and immigration. After taking oath as President, Trump has taken many such decisions which can have an impact on India, this time too he will focus on policies related to trade and security.
Recently, the Trump administration has deported 104 Indian immigrants who had entered the US illegally. According to US officials, currently there are more than 18,000 Indians in the US who do not have valid documents, and more than 800 people are expected to be deported to India in the future.
Also, the Trump administration has decided to impose a 25 percent tariff on steel and aluminum imports, which is likely to affect Indian steel companies. In this context, all three countries have expressed displeasure over the tariff decisions imposed on Canada, Mexico and China. China has openly condemned this decision, due to which India is also keeping an eye on US-China relations.
There is also a possibility of a discussion on BRICS currency in the meeting. Trump has warned that if transactions are made in an alternative currency instead of the US dollar, a 100 percent tax will be imposed on it, due to which the affected parties may be out of the US market.
Apart from this, the situation in the Indo-Pacific region, Ukraine conflict and events in West Asia will also be discussed between the two leaders. President Trump may demand further reduction in tariffs from PM Modi to boost India's exports and reduce the trade deficit.
To stop the growing dominance of China, PM Modi can advocate for strengthening the Quad Summit. The Quad Summit is going to be held in India this year, in which Modi can invite Trump to come to New Delhi. Friendly relations between the two leaders can also work in India's interest. Also, there is a possibility of further increase in tension with Pakistan due to Trump's tough stand on terrorism.
