India Readies to Take Strong Action: Summons Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The dispute over fencing along the India-Bangladesh border has intensified, with India summoning Bangladesh’s Deputy High Commissioner Nurul Islam on Monday. This move follows Bangladesh's action on Sunday, where they summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to discuss the issue.
The Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized the fencing work being carried out by the Border Security Force (BSF) along the border, calling it an "illegal attempt." However, the interim government of Bangladesh, led by Mohammad Yunus, has yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter.
The India-Bangladesh border stretches 4,156 kilometers, of which 3,271 kilometers have already been fenced by India. Fencing work is still ongoing on the remaining 885 kilometers of the border. Bangladesh had earlier accused India of attempting to install fences at five locations along the border, claiming that such actions violate bilateral agreements between the two countries. The growing tension highlights ongoing disputes over border security and territorial agreements between the two nations.
