New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Women in Delhi eagerly await the promised Rs 2,500 from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which was pledged during the Delhi elections. The amount was expected to be transferred on International Women’s Day, March 8. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been vocal in its criticism, highlighting the approaching deadline and questioning the delay. The scheme, according to officials, will benefit women whose annual income is under Rs 3 lakh, who do not pay income tax, and who are between 18 and 60 years old. Additionally, the beneficiaries must not hold a government job or receive any other form of government financial aid. The BJP had promised to implement this scheme as soon as it came to power, and sources estimate that between 15 to 20 lakh women will be eligible.

An official revealed that the cabinet note for the scheme is expected to be ready soon, and once approved, new software will be developed to verify the eligibility of women through forms. The IT department is also working on gathering data from various sources to ensure only eligible women are included.

In Delhi, there are more than 72 lakh registered female voters, and about half of them typically cast their votes. With an estimated 20 lakh women meeting the eligibility criteria, the government aims to roll out this much-anticipated scheme.

Meanwhile, AAP workers put up posters across Delhi counting down the days, with one reading "only three more days." AAP leader Rituraj Jha pointed to Prime Minister Modi’s earlier statement on January 30, when he claimed that the scheme would be implemented immediately after the BJP came to power. "Now, with only three days left, every woman in Delhi is waiting for the Rs 2,500 to appear in their bank accounts," Jha said, demanding answers for the delay.

As the countdown continues, women across Delhi are holding out hope for the promised financial aid.
