New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) experienced strong tremors early on Monday as the capital was hit by a 4.0 magnitude earthquake. The epicenter was located near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan, South Delhi, at a depth of 5 kilometers, according to the National Centre for Seismology. The earthquake struck at 5:36 am, and a loud sound was reported, likely due to the shallow depth of the tremor. Many residents rushed outside in panic, and videos showing fans shaking and people standing outside their homes went viral on social media. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Political leaders shared their prayers for safety, with BJP leader Tajinder Singh Bagga and Congress leader Alka Lamba both acknowledging the tremors. Delhi’s caretaker Chief Minister Atishi also prayed for everyone’s well-being, while AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal expressed similar sentiments. The Delhi Police urged residents to dial 112 in case of an emergency.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to remain calm

and stay alert for possible aftershocks.

"Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation," he tweeted. The Dhaula Kuan area has experienced low-magnitude earthquakes in the past, including a 3.3 magnitude tremor in 2015. Delhi-NCR falls within Seismic Zone IV, making it prone to moderate to strong earthquakes.
