Calcutta High Court Orders Central Forces in Murshidabad After Waqf Act Violence
Kolkata (The Uttam Hindu): Following the violence over the Waqf Act in Murshidabad, West Bengal, the Calcutta High Court on Saturday delivered a major verdict on BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s demand for the deployment of central forces. The court has ordered the deployment of central forces in the violence-affected areas. However, the state government opposed this demand, stating that such a deployment was unnecessary. As per reports, the Director General of Police (DGP) of West Bengal is expected to reach Murshidabad within the next two hours.
Meanwhile, violence escalated today amid ongoing protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act in Murshidabad, resulting in the deaths of two more people. According to the police, a frenzied mob brutally murdered a father and son. In the Jafrabad area of the violence-affected Shamsherganj region, a mob entered their home and stabbed both the father and son multiple times. They were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared them dead. The victim’s family has alleged that some anti-social elements looted their house and then viciously stabbed the father and son.
According to news agencies, another person was shot on Saturday morning in the Dhuliyan area of the Shamsherganj block. Notably, during protests against the Waqf Amendment Act on Friday, large-scale violence had broken out in the Suti and Shamsherganj areas of Murshidabad. To bring the situation under control, security has been tightened in the area and police are continuously patrolling. The administration is taking the matter seriously and is actively searching for those responsible. Meanwhile, tension continues to prevail in the region.
