Biometric Data Tampering: 1,500 Aadhaar Cards Compromised in 12 States

Meerut (The Uttam Hindu): In a significant breakthrough, the Uttar Pradesh Police have dismantled a sophisticated identity fraud racket operating from Badaun and Amroha, accused of tampering with biometric data of over 1,500 Aadhaar cardholders across 12 states. A joint cyber team, led by SP Sambhal Krishna Kumar Bishnoi and ASP Anukriti Sharma, arrested four key players behind the operation.

The Masterminds

The accused, all in their 20s, include Ashish Kumar, Dharmender Singh, Raunak Pal from Badaun and Kasim Hussain from Amroha. They allegedly exploited loopholes in the UIDAI system, using counterfeit websites mimicking official Aadhaar and Passport Seva portals to generate fake documents.

Network and Operations

The gang operated a vast network of 200-300 "retailers" across states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, West Bengal and Delhi. These agents collected documents from clients seeking to update Aadhaar details, charging between Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000 for the service.

Modus Operandi

The gang used advanced software to bypass geo-fencing restrictions, allowing them to upload tampered biometric data remotely. They also modified fingerprint scanners to accept silicone-molded fingerprints, creating fake prints from real operators and unsuspecting individuals.

 Forgery and Fake Documents

The network created fake birth certificates, ration cards and passports to support Aadhaar changes. After stricter verification norms were introduced in December 2024, the gang switched tactics, using forged documents on third-party portals to generate over 20 fake passports.

Investigations and Arrests

The police seized evidence of over 1,500 tampered Aadhaar cards and 400 supporting documents. The accused face charges under the Aadhaar Act, IT Act 2016 and Passport Act 1967.
