New Year Brings Cheer to Stock Market, Investors Earn ₹37,000 Crore
Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu): Domestic benchmark indices ended flat on Thursday. At the close of trading, there was selling observed in sectors like IT, FMCG, metals, media, and private banks on the Nifty. Adani Ports led the top gainers list, with its shares rising by more than 5%, closing at ₹1,243.90. Adani Green Energy also saw a gain of ₹33.20, closing at ₹1,064.30. Investors in the stock market earned a total of about ₹37,000 crore in profit today. The broader market showed mixed trends. The Sensex closed at 78,472.48, down by 0.39 points, while the Nifty ended at 23,750.20, up by 22.55 points or 0.10%.
The Nifty Bank closed at 51,170.70, down by 62.30 points or 0.12%, while the Nifty Midcap 100 Index rose by 67.80 points or 0.12%, closing at 57,125.70. On the other hand, the Nifty Smallcap 100 Index closed at 18,728.65, down by 4 points or 0.02%. On the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), 1,639 shares closed in the green, 2,329 in the red, and 106 shares showed no change. According to market experts, the domestic market remained stable on the last expiry day of the year, while other markets were closed for holidays, and there was a lack of major domestic or global triggers. Recent corrections in auto stocks led to profits. Sector-wise, buying was observed in the Nifty in auto, PSU banks, financial services, pharma, realty, energy, infra, and commodities. Among the top gainers in the Sensex pack were Adani Ports, M&M, Maruti Suzuki, Sun Pharma, Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Ultra Tech Cement, Power Grid, HCL Tech, SBI, and Tata Steel, while the top losers were Titan, Asian Paints, Zomato, Tech Mahindra, Nestle India, and Reliance.
Experts noted, “There is ongoing concern regarding FII outflows and the depreciation of the rupee, given the strength in the US dollar index, potential adverse tariffs, and expected rate cuts in 2025, which contributed to a subdued market sentiment.” Foreign Institutional Investors (FII) sold shares worth ₹2,454.21 crore on December 24, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DII) bought shares worth ₹2,819.25 crore on the same day. Investors' wealth increased by ₹37,000 crore The total market capitalization of BSE-listed companies reached ₹442.08 lakh crore on December 26, up from ₹441.71 lakh crore on Tuesday, December 24. In other words, the market capitalization of BSE-listed companies increased by ₹37,000 crore today, or in simpler terms, investors' wealth grew by ₹37,000 crore.
