Banned for 5 Years, Shein Makes a Shocking Comeback in India with Reliance Retail
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Five years after being banned as part of a crackdown, China's fast fashion brand Shein has made its return to the Indian market through a partnership with Reliance Retail. Following the initial ban, many Indian users were left uncertain about their pending orders, with the app displaying a message stating, "We hope to resume services soon." Now, after half a decade, Shein is officially back.
A message on the app confirms that deliveries have resumed in select locations, stating, "We're shipping in Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane. Pan-India shipping coming soon." Shein was among the 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok, Weibo, PUBG and WeChat, that were banned by the Indian government over concerns related to data security and user privacy. The Ministry of Electronics and IT had justified the decision, citing "credible inputs that these apps pose a threat to India's sovereignty and integrity."
With the restrictions now lifted, Shein can fully operate in India with the company assuring authorities that it will source goods from within the country for its global operations. As part of its relaunch strategy, Shein has introduced free shipping on all orders and easy returns. The app, now available as 'SHEIN India Fast Fashion' on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store is officially registered under Reliance Retail Private Limited.
