Update: 2024-12-12 04:04 GMT

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): A cold wave is intensifying across the plains of the country, with dense fog blanketing Delhi this morning. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the minimum temperature in Delhi has plummeted to 4 degrees Celsius, significantly increasing the cold wave conditions. The dense fog is also causing reduced visibility, leading to potential disruptions in traffic and public life. The IMD has issued a warning for further cold wave conditions in the region, with these weather patterns expected to persist in the coming days.

In addition to the cold wave, the IMD has issued a rain alert for several states. Heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Tamil Nadu, leading to the closure of schools in several districts. Schools in Chennai, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Tiruvarur, Ranipet, and Tiruvallur have been closed today due to the heavy rain forecast.

The capital, Delhi, is grappling with thick fog and a sharp temperature drop. As the cold wave intensifies, visibility is low, affecting traffic flow across the city. Delhiites have been seen bundled up in warm clothing as they brace for continued cold and fog. The IMD has indicated that these conditions may last for several more days.

Meanwhile, North India is also feeling the effects of the cold wave, with states like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand experiencing a dip in minimum temperatures. These cold conditions are expected to worsen, further intensifying the chill across the region. Cold wave conditions are also prevalent in Bihar and Jharkhand, with the coldest temperatures being recorded during late evenings and early mornings.

In Maharashtra and Karnataka, light rain and colder temperatures are expected, particularly in the Western Ghats. Citizens in these states are advised to stay alert and prepare for the changing weather conditions as the cold wave and rain continue to affect large parts of the country.
