Trump Eases Tariff Pressure on Canada, Grants One-Month Relief

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Acting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump. This was the first conversation between the two leaders after Trump's declaration of tariff war. Trump is seen taking U-turns continuously. In fact, since taking oath, the US President has been imposing tariffs on other countries. But yesterday he spoke to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum over the phone and agreed to postpone the tariffs.

Donald Trump spoke to Canada's acting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over the phone. Trudeau said the conversation with Trump was good and he agreed to pause the 25% tariff imposed on exports for "at least 30 days".

The two leaders agreed to work to address concerns over illegal immigration and fentanyl. Canada also announced retaliatory 25% tariffs on US imports, to be imposed on Tuesday. Ottawa's tariffs were to be imposed on items such as beer, wine, household appliances and sporting goods.

Canada to work with US on multiple fronts

Trudeau said Canada will implement a $1.3-billion plan to reinforce the border with new helicopters, technology and personnel, enhance coordination with US partners and increase resources to stop the flow of fentanyl.

Trudeau said on X that there are about 10,000 frontline personnel working and will continue to work to secure the border. In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a fentanyl czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, have 24/7 surveillance on the border, launch a Canada-U.S. joint strike force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering.
