Trapped Inside a Burning Tent: Three Workers Die in Horrific Delhi Fire, One Barely Escapes
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In a tragic incident late Monday night, a fire broke out in a laborers’ tent in Delhi’s Anand Vihar area, resulting in the death of three people. The incident occurred near Mangalam Road, sending shockwaves through the local community, which includes slum dwellers and workers from the nearby industrial area. The Anand Vihar police station received information about the fire at 2:42 AM on Tuesday. According to officials, the fire started in a tent set up on a DDA plot, where four employees of Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) were residing. The victims, identified as residents of Banda and Auraiya in Uttar Pradesh, were working as casual laborers at IGL.
The deceased have been identified as 30-year-old Jaggi, 40-year-old Shyam Singh, and 37-year-old Kanta Prasad. A fourth worker, Nitin Singh, who was also inside the tent, managed to escape with minor injuries. Another resident, Kailash Singh, was reportedly not present in the tent at the time of the incident.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the laborers had been using a diesel lamp for lighting, which was placed on a cooler stand inside the tent. For safety, the tent had been locked from the inside at night. According to Nitin Singh, Shyam Singh alerted him about the fire around 2 AM. Shyam tried to open the tent’s gate but failed. While Nitin managed to escape, the other three were trapped inside and died due to suffocation and burns. The intensity of the fire also caused a gas cylinder inside the tent to explode.
Firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene, and fire tenders managed to bring the flames under control. Following this, crime and forensic teams (FSL) inspected the site and collected evidence. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination as part of the legal investigation.
