Supreme Court’s Big Move: Well Opening Stalled Amid Sambhal Mosque Controversy

Update: 2025-01-10 08:35 GMT

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): On Friday, the Supreme Court issued a directive preventing the Uttar Pradesh government and the Sambhal district administration from taking any action concerning the disputed well at the Shahi Jama Masjid. The well, which is partly inside the mosque and partly outside has become the center of a communal dispute with claims of a Hindu temple existing at the mosque’s location.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna and Justice PV Sanjay Kumar emphasized the importance of maintaining communal harmony in this sensitive matter. The court stayed the notice issued by the Sambhal Nagar Palika Parishad in December 2024, which had proposed cleaning the well, verifying the property and opening the outer section of the mosque for public access. The Supreme Court has called for careful monitoring of the situation and stressed the need for restraint to avoid escalating tensions in the area.
