Raging Wildfires in Los Angeles Destroy Homes, Cars; 30,000 to Evacuate Amid Emergency Declaration
California (The Uttam Hindu): A massive wildfire broke out in an upscale area of Los Angeles on Tuesday rapidly spreading as fierce winds battered Southern California. Firefighters are racing to contain the blaze which grew from 20 acres to over 1,200 acres in just a few hours.
Over 250 firefighters supported by helicopters and fire engines have been deployed to combat the fire. Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley reported that no injuries have been recorded so far, but more than 30,000 residents are under evacuation orders. Additionally, over 13,000 buildings and 10,000 homes remain at risk.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath in a press briefing revealed that some schools are being relocated due to the fire's spread. "We are dedicating every resource to urgently contain this fire. I know today is terrifying and painful. Please know you are not alone," she stated, as reported by media inputs.
Forecasters have warned that the worst is yet to come with the windstorm expected to persist for days. Wind gusts in mountainous and foothill areas could reach up to 160 kmph, potentially worsening the situation.
Acting Mayor and Los Angeles City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson announced a state of emergency for the city stating that the declaration would help mobilize additional resources. Despite the challenging conditions Dawson assured residents that Los Angeles is "well prepared" to fight the wildfire.
California Governor Gavin Newsom highlighted the gravity of the situation noting that "many structures" have already been destroyed and warning that embers carried by the strong winds could ignite new fires miles away. He urged residents to follow evacuation orders and instructions from emergency responders.
