Mumbai airport: Over ₹50 crore worth of hydroponic weed seized along with gold and diamonds
Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu): The Customs Department at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has made a significant seizure, confiscating hydroponic weed valued at over ₹50 crore, along with gold and diamonds. Eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the case. The seizure was made during a special operation carried out between January 28 and January 31.
According to Customs officials, the operation resulted in the confiscation of 50.11 kilograms of hydroponic weed, diamonds worth ₹93.8 lakh and 2.073 kilograms of gold valued at ₹1.5 crore. Smuggling cases at Mumbai International Airport have been on the rise with a major gold smuggling case involving airport staff arrested last month for aiding smugglers.
Hydroponic weed, a type of narcotic substance belonging to the cannabis family is becoming increasingly popular for smuggling. It can be grown in water and is more expensive than regular dry drugs. Due to its high demand internationally, the smuggling of hydroponic weed is on the rise.
