New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Following the global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, a new virus called Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has emerged first identified in China. Now, the first case of HMPV in India has been reported in an 8-month-old girl at a private hospital in Bengaluru. Although the health department has not conducted its own tests officials have stated there is no reason to doubt the hospital’s findings. HMPV is typically detected in children and constitutes approximately 0.7% of all flu cases. The specific strain of this virus remains unidentified.

HMPV, also known as Human Metapneumovirus, presents symptoms similar to the common cold such as coughing, wheezing, a runny nose or sore throat. While it generally causes mild flu-like symptoms it can lead to severe illness in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Patients infected with the virus may experience respiratory difficulties prompting heightened vigilance. In response, Delhi’s medical authorities have issued an advisory to tackle potential challenges associated with the virus.

Director General of Health Services Dr. Vandana Bagga, convened a meeting with Chief District Medical Officers and the State Program Officer of IDSP to assess the city's preparedness against respiratory diseases. Hospitals have been instructed to report cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) through the IHIP portal. Strict isolation protocols have been mandated for suspected cases along with enhanced surveillance and documentation. Hospitals are also required to maintain stocks of essential medications such as paracetamol, antihistamines, bronchodilators, cough syrups and oxygen for managing mild cases.
