Himachal Gets a White Blanket: Snowfall Starts, Orange Alert Issued

Update: 2024-12-27 11:58 GMT

Himachal Pradesh(The Uttam Hindu): Himachal Pradesh has already witnessed the season's first snowfall, with the Meteorological Department issuing an orange alert for light to moderate snowfall in higher and surrounding hilly areas. The snowfall, which began in some regions, is expected to continue until December 29, along with heavy rain in certain locations.

Shimla and other popular tourist destinations in the state are experiencing snow, adding to the festive cheer for tourists. This snowfall marks the second round of snowfall this month in Shimla, and if predictions hold, it could be the third snowfall in the region this December, which would be only the second occurrence of such an event in the last decade. The last time Shimla saw three rounds of snowfall in December was in 2014.

The ongoing snowfall has brought a surge of tourists to the region, who are enjoying the winter wonderland before the New Year. The fresh snow is also expected to benefit apple growers, as it is crucial for the apple crop in the state. However, the weather department has warned of a drop in temperatures by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius over the next few days, leading to cold wave conditions in several areas. Travel in snow-affected regions may be difficult due to blocked or slippery roads and low visibility. Authorities have advised caution while driving and limited outdoor activities in the affected areas. With the forecast predicting continued snowfall and rain through January 9, the state is preparing for more weather challenges as winter continues to intensify.
