Chappell’s Approach Won’t Work: BCCI to Reassess Gambhir’s Coaching Role Based on Champions Trophy Outcome

Update: 2025-01-15 03:58 GMT

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as India’s head coach is under review following disappointing performances by the team in recent Test matches including losses to New Zealand and Australia. His position will be re-evaluated based on India’s performance in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy starting February 19, 2025. If the team fails to perform well in the tournament his role could become untenable, despite his contract running until the 2027 World Cup. So far, under Gambhir’s leadership India has struggled winning only four of ten Tests and losing to Sri Lanka in a bilateral ODI series in August 2024.

A key issue contributing to the uncertainty around Gambhir’s future is his push to dismantle the longstanding "superstar culture" within the team. His efforts to create a more team-oriented environment have led to friction with senior players. Gambhir’s insistence on maintaining discipline such as turning down demands from star players regarding hotel choices and practice timings has created discomfort among some members. Additionally, his style of leadership which emphasizes strict team values, has been criticized for a lack of communication with the players.

Critics have also drawn comparisons between Gambhir's coaching style and that of former coach Greg Chappell, suggesting that his approach may not resonate well in the Indian cricket culture. Coaches like Ravi Shastri, Rahul Dravid and Gary Kirsten, who took a more media-friendly behind-the-scenes approach are considered better suited to manage the Indian team. Furthermore, Gambhir’s handling of his personal assistant during the Australia tour has raised concerns within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with questions about breaches in protocol and the assistant’s presence in restricted areas. These factors, along with the team's performance have led to growing uncertainty regarding Gambhir’s future as head coach.
