BIS Cracks Down on Amazon, Flipkart: Thousands of Non-Compliant Products Seized
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has cracked down on e-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart, seizing thousands of non-certified products from their warehouses in cities like Lucknow, Gurugram, and Delhi. The raids, conducted to curb the distribution of non-compliant products, uncovered a significant number of products lacking mandatory BIS certification.
Seized Products Include:
- Toys and Hand Blenders: 215 toys and 24 hand blenders were seized from an Amazon warehouse in Lucknow on March 7.
- Aluminium Foils and Water Bottles: 58 aluminium foils, 34 metallic water bottles, and other products were seized from an Amazon warehouse in Gurugram in February 2025.
- Stainless Steel Bottles and Speakers: 534 stainless steel bottles, 134 toys, and 41 speakers were seized from a Flipkart warehouse in Gurugram.
- Electric Water Heaters and Food Mixers: Approximately 7,000 electric water heaters, 4,000 electric food mixers, and other products were seized from Techvision International facilities in Delhi.
The seized products belong to brands like Digismart, Activa, Inalsa, Cello Swift, and Butterfly, among others. BIS has initiated legal action against the responsible entities, filing two court cases against Techvision International Pvt Ltd. Defaulters may face penalties ranging from ₹2 lakh to ten times the value of the goods sold, along with potential imprisonment of up to two years.
