Bangladesh Summons Indian High Commissioner Over Increased Border Deployment
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Tensions with India have been increasing since the removal of Sheikh Hasina's government in Bangladesh. India has expressed objection several times over the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. Now tensions have increased between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and BSF on the border. Generally, there was peace on the border between India and Bangladesh. However, there are reports of tension due to infiltration and barbed wire fencing. Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh has summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma regarding the tension on the border.
The development comes hours after Bangladesh alleged that India was trying to erect fences at five locations along the India-Bangladesh border in violation of bilateral agreements. Verma was seen entering the ministry at around 3 pm. His meeting with Foreign Secretary Jashim Uddin lasted for about 45 minutes. Though no official statement was issued by the interim government of Bangladesh regarding the discussions, officials confirmed that the High Commissioner had been summoned.
Recently, a BGB commander had claimed that the Bangladeshi army had occupied an area of five kilometers on the banks of the Godalia river. A situation of tension had arisen after this statement. After this, a flag meeting of BGB and BSF officials was called. The BSF said that the BGB officer had given a misleading statement. The BSF completely rejected those claims.
