Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has appealed to both the Punjab government and the State Election Commission to avoid holding local government elections between December 15 and December 31, citing the significance of this period. This timeframe coincides with the annual commemoration of the martyrdom of the four Sahibzades and Mata Gujri, a solemn occasion observed by millions of devotees in Punjab.

During this period, large numbers of people visit religious sites linked to the sacrifices of the Sahibzades and Mata Gujri to pay their respects. The SAD emphasized that the elections would disturb the peaceful and sacred atmosphere that prevails during this time, as people engage in prayer and reflection. The party also expressed concern that holding elections during this period could hurt the religious sentiments of the public, as it would interfere with the solemn observances.

The Akali Dal has called on the Punjab government and the Election Commission to take into account the deep religious significance of these dates and to reschedule the local government elections to avoid any clash with the commemoration. The party argued that the elections should be held at a time when the religious atmosphere remains undisturbed, ensuring that people can honor the memory of the martyrs in peace. This appeal comes as political parties in Punjab prepare for the upcoming local elections, with the Akali Dal urging a delay to preserve the sanctity of the period.
