53 Dead, Dozens Buried as Earthquake Devastates Tibet; Regional Tremors Felt
New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Strong tremors of earthquake were felt in many states of India including Nepal, China and Tibet on Tuesday morning. Tibet has suffered the most damage due to the earthquake. Many buildings have collapsed there. Apart from this, 53 people have died, while 62 people are reported to be injured. Apart from this, dozens of people are buried under the debris.
Strong earthquake tremors were felt in various parts of North India including Sikkim and other northeastern states, Bihar and West Bengal on Tuesday morning. After feeling strong tremors in Nepal's capital Kathmandu, people came out of their homes and ran towards the streets and open spaces.
According to the National Center for Seismology, the first earthquake of magnitude 7.1 struck Shijang near the Nepal-Tibet border at 6:35 am local time. An earthquake of this magnitude is considered quite powerful and is capable of causing serious damage. Chinese officials recorded a magnitude of 6.8 earthquake in Shigatse city, Tibet's second largest city.
